The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on June 26th to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and the illegal trade of drugs. This day aims to spread knowledge about the negative impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities, as well as the efforts of governments and organizations to combat the global drug problem. The United Nations General Assembly established this day in 1987, with the theme “Think Health, Not Drugs” to emphasize the importance of health and well-being as a solution to drug abuse.

The theme for International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in 2023 is “People First: stop stigma and Discrimination, strengthen Prevention”. The aim of the United Nations Office On Drug And Crime (UNODC) is to raise awareness about the importance of respecting and empathizing with drug users, providing evidence-based, voluntary services to all, offering alternatives to punishment, prioritizing prevention, and leading compassionately. UNODC’s campaign for this year also said that it aims to combat stigma and discrimination against people who use drugs by promoting language and attitudes that are respectful and non-judgmental
